1. Changing black & white graphics to
    256 Color graphics for coloring.

In Windows 3.1 Paintbrush program you must load the graphic and then choose [File] then choose [Save as], when the [Save as] screen comes up change the name of the graphic and look close in the lower left corner you will find the [Save as file type] box it has a small triangle down button [v] click on it and then an elevator bar find the color choices.   Windows bitmap BMP 256 color is normally the best one to choose, then [Save] the file giving it the new name.

When you return to the graphic screen in Windows 3.1 Paintbrush program nothing has changed, if you are in Windows 95 or 98 Paint you will see the color palette.  To get the color palette in the Windows 3.1 Paintbrush program reload the graphic by selecting [File] then select [Open] and remember that you renamed the graphic so look for the new name.  Select the graphic and select [OK] now you should see the color palette.  This should make it much easier to color the graphic now.  Have fun with your new graphics.

2. Working magic with color erasers or replacers

Replacing one color with another color in a graphic image with Windows 3.1 Paintbrush or PC Paintbrush Designer can be easier than you think.  Forget painting one pixel at a time except in tight places.  There is a little-known trick in each of these programs that will greatly speed things up.

For these tricks to work in Paintbrush your video mode and graphics should match.  With the video mode set to 16 colors, save your graphic as a 16 color bitmap.  If your video is set at 256 colors, save your graphic as a 256 color bitmap.  Paintbrush is a sensitive program, if it is not working correctly you can probably expect other video problems to soon show up in your system.  PC Paintbrush Designer is not as finicky.

3. What is the color eraser tool in Windows 3.1 Paintbrush ?

When you click on the Eraser tool and drag the small square box pointer across a graphic image, it replaces all pixels with the background color.

The Color Eraser tool is more selective it affects only one color.  When you click on the Color Eraser tool, your cursor becomes a small square box with a super imposed cross-hair.  Drag the Color Eraser pointer across a graphic image, it erases pixels of the selected foreground color only and replaces them with the selected background color, it leaves all other pixels unchanged. This small difference in function makes the Color Eraser tool very powerful.

4. Using the color eraser tool in Windows 3.1 Paintbrush

Select the Color Eraser tool just to the left of the Eraser Tool on the tool Bar.  Select the color you want to change, from the color palette, with the left mouse button.  Select the replacement color, with the right mouse button.

Drag the Color Eraser pointer across the portion of the image you want to change.  When you do this, all pixels that match the target color change to the replacement color.  All other pixels remain unchanged.

5. Replacing all occurrences of a color with Windows Paintbrush.

In Windows 3.1 Paintbrush's there is an even better secret trick.  If you need to drag the Color Eraser across the entire graphic image to make sure you have changed all of the occurrence of the target color here is what you do.

First make sure that you have selected the correct colors then you can simply double-click on the Color Eraser tool in the toolbox to change every occurrence of the target color in the active drawing area to the replacement color.  This change affects only those areas currently shown in the active drawing area, so you'll need to use the scroll bars to expose all hidden portions of the graphic image and then double-click on the Color Eraser tool again to complete the color change.

3. You should now be back in the paint program and if nothing seems to have changed that is OK.  Now select [File]then select [Open].  The file REDCANDY.BMP should be already selected, if not then find it and select it and then select [OK] .
4. You should be back in the paint program and the palette bar at the bottom now has colors in it.
5. At the bottom of your screen is a palette bar of colors on the left is a white box with a black box in the center of it.
6. Now here is the trick.  Place your cursor on the color red colored box and click the right mouse button.
7. The white box with a black box in the center of it should now be red with a black box in the center.
8. On the left side of the screen there is a tool bar a couple of erasers and some other tools we are interested in the eraser just above the paint roller.  Place the cursor on the eraser and click the left mouse button to select it.
9. Now here is the fun part.  Place the cursor box on the candy border and press down on the right mouse button and move it over the candy.
10. You can make each piece of candy a different color by changing the color of out side box.
11. The inside box is the color that will be changed.  The outside color is the color it will be changed to.
12. When you are done select [File] select [Save] you have already changed the name so you don't need to do a [Save As] unless you want to place the graphic in a special directory.

Western Clip Art Volume #1 should have taught you about cutting and pasting especially if you played with the wagons and horses or the quarter page borders with Windows 3.1 Paintbrush or Windows 95 Paint programs.
These graphics are mostly screen sized graphics that can be shrunk, with a publisher program, for use in letterheads, business cards and in newsletters. These graphics will also work in newsletters and can be shrunk to fit in small places. They will also look great as cover art and for larger projects like posters, signs and even T-Shirt designs.
The graphics in this manual are reduced from their actual size to fit in this manual. The graphics and borders are made to work together giving you all kinds of design possibilities. Use what looks best for your project and resize the graphic in your publisher program for best results.
