We chose to use the PICT graphic format, because it is easily edited with just about any paint program you choose. Editing changing and coloring your graphics can be a lot of fun and give you exciting results. You may also cut and paste your graphics or even incorporate some of the graphics into the borders if you like. Special effects like inverse can really dress things up. Feel free to personalize them how ever you choose. Just have fun with these designs and always give your new graphic a new name, so you dont delete the original. Putting spots on plain horses will give you a new Paint, Pinto or Appaloosa to ad to your herd. You can even remove tack and riders with your favorite paint program.
The graphics in any of Horse Feathers Graphics manuals are reduced from their actual size. The graphics and borders or even the lines and columns are made to work together giving you all kinds of design possibilities. Use what looks best for your project and resize the graphic in your publisher program for best results.
You will need a publisher program with more capabilities then a paint program or a word processor, so you can really have fun with graphics. You may have to shrink these graphics to fit in your news letters. So remember to look for dark corner nodes in your publisher.
You will need a Macintosh computer with a minimum of at 8 meg of memory, a hard drive with about 3 meg. of hard drive space for your new graphics, and a 3.5 High Density Disk Drive. You will also need a program that accepts the PICT graphic file format. Most publishers programs and many other programs do.
Installation:These graphic files are compressed to allow them to fit onto one disk. This does not affect the quality of the artwork. The graphics must be decompressed on to your hard drive before you can use them. The Graphics will be stored in a folder called Western1, Holiday, Events, English in your DOCUMENTS folder.
1. Insert the Western1, Holiday, Events, or English disk into the drive.
2. Double click on the floppy disk Icon to open its folder.
3. Double click on the Western1.SEA, Holiday.SEA, Events.SEA, or English.SEA icon.
4. You may choose any destination folder you wish but by default it uses the hard disk icon.
5. When the installation program is done, click OK.
6. Press [ z ] key and press [ Y ] key to put away the disk.
3Using PICT Graphics With Various Programs:Back To Top
Once the graphics are installed on the hard drive you will need to go to a program that uses graphics. As general a rule the graphic images can be opened within an application by choosing either [OPEN], [IMPORT] or [PLACE] to place the PICT graphics onto your page. These commands are usually found under the [FILE] menu or under the [INSERT] menu in most Macintosh applications. For more information, see your Applications Users Manual.
All Graphics Need A Program:You should find enough instructions here to help you get started with most programs. It is always best to refer to your programs manual as the program you are using may have a better way of importing the graphics them we have listed here. We could not fit instructions to, all versions of, all the wonderful programs that you can use graphics with, in to this manual.
NOTE: The computer treats the the borders lines and columns all as graphic files. Publisher programs can place text frames over a graphic border, most word processors programs can not or at the very least make it complicated to overlap graphics and text.
How To Find A Good Shareware Graphic Converter On The Internet. You can not normally access a graphic, if you just click your mouse on a graphic file icon, because the graphics are associated to Graphics Converter 2.0. If you have a shareware program called Graphics Converter 2.0 on your system you can see the graphic if you clicked on the icon.
If you have no programs that use graphics and want to view the graphics or are in need of a converter program Graphics converter 2.0 is available from Horse Feathers Graphics for just $5.00 shipping included.

While the Text Box is selected it will also have resizing nodes. When you are done typing the text click your mouse outside the text frame to deselect it.
Using the Program called Brush Stroke to print a border graphic then using a word processor to print the text on the same paper works. But that is so much work and is not the best idea. It is better to use a publisher so you can resize them properly and you can get a good print out the first time.
Border graphics are used in Publishers where a text frame may be placed over a graphic leaving a design around the edges to form the border. Border graphics can also be used in word processor programs that accept graphics. You can do what we call a print over. Print your border, leaving room in the center for your text. Then line up your text on the next page. Print the border page then run the sheet you just printed, back through your printer and print the text.
Full Page Border graphics will fit a vertical page in most programs.
If placed side by side in a publisher program they can be made to fit a half page or a full horizontal page by shrinking or stretched to fit. Then place a text box over top of the border graphics.

You might find that these borders are just too thick. The horses and riders are nice but you wanted to put more words in between.
In a Publisher program, you can do marvelous things. On a vertical page lay down four borders two across and two down and shrink them by 50% like the borders you see here. Then lay a text box over top of the borders hiding the center graphics. Now select the text box and import your text.
If you only have a word processor and it will let you shrink graphics, then go to a paint program like then cut and past these borders to a screen that has the image attributes set to 1280 x 1746 in pixel size. You will have to select [view] [zoom out] to select that large of a graphic in the paint program. Then you can hope that the word processor will let you shrink a graphic that is that big. Better yet, make life easy, get a publisher program.
If you are trying to do a horizontal page set your image attributes to 873 x 1280 and paste two borders side by side in the paint program or a publisher, how ever you wish. This is more of an idea of what can be done, then a how to step by step instructions. Have fun learning the exciting things your paint program can do. Donna
Note: The borders in the Full Page Border folder were created with a Paint Program and the Small Graphics. You can create borders like these with the graphics provided or use the columns, lines, or other borders to enhance your publications.
Vertical quarter page border graphics will fit a vertical quarter page or stretched to fit a full vertical page
Horizontal border graphics can be made to fit a half page or stretched to fit a full horizontal page. You should find the vertical and horizontal border files under the border directory.
You can make a large thin border by pasting four borders on a graphic screen. The small thin border are really four of the same border placed side by side and most of the center strips have been erased to show you how to create a very detailed border, in any shape you might want. I left a little of the center lines so you could see how to lay up the borders.Erase this part of the frame in a paint program. Or just place the text frame over the borders who is going to know?
Each graphic is accessible in two sizes. Similar graphics have the similar names but are in a different folder. Some of the graphics may differ more then others. These graphics are in the large graphic and small graphic folders. Similar graphics have the same name and they are in different folders, so you will know instantly what graphic and size you want to work with. The small graphics will have less detail and appear finer than the large graphic when reduced to smaller sizes. The small graphics can be used to create borders or used in small places. The graphics and borders are made to work together giving you many kinds of design possibilities. The large graphics work well as eye catching center pieces and focal points. They are also great for letterheads and stationary. Use what looks best for your project with the program you are using.
Graphic columns are great as column dividers in news letters or columns of data. They can be stretched or pasted to fit the size you need for your page. Check out how good they look when you shrink them.
Graphic Columns are vertical lines of graphics. Graphic Columns are suitable for use in publisher programs and paint programs easier then in word processing programs. They can be used individually or combined with Horizontal lines to create a variety of borders.
Graphic Lines are horizontal lines of graphics. Graphic Lines are suitable for word processing and publishers. They can be used individuality or combined with the graphic columns to create a variety of borders.
We chose to use the PICT graphic format, because it is an easily edited bit-map graphics format, that you can import and modify as needed. You can to modify your graphics with any paint program you choose and you may cut and paste your borders from the lines, columns, or from borders or even incorporate some of the graphics in them for special effects. Feel free to personalize them how ever you choose. Just have fun.
You dont have to be an artist to have fun with graphics.
Some of their basic functions of a paint program are really worth learning. Most basic paint programs have [CUT], [PASTE], [FLIP], [INVERSE], [ERASE], [COLOR] and [RESIZE] commands. You can even reshape the drawing area and past the designs into it.
You can play around with the borders on a graphic screen. Make small thin borders out of the same fat border placed side by side then erase the center to create a very detailed border, in any shape you might want. I left a little of the center lines so you could see how to lay up the borders.
The graphics and borders are made to work together giving you all kinds of design possibilities. The large graphics Use what looks best for your project with the program you are using.
Graphic Columns are a vertical line of graphics. They can be stretched or cut and pasted to fit the size you need for your page. Graphic Columns and Lines of graphics are suitable for word processor and publisher programs. Columns can be used individually or combined with Graphic Lines to create a variety of personalized borders. Columns work well with those word processors that let you write in columns, they will also let you place a column of graphics. This is a simulation of how you can use columns and lines of graphics.
Most Paint program are really worth learning. You dont have to be an artist to have fun with graphics on a computer. Learning the tools of a good paint program will make any one look like an artist these days. You just have to learn to cut and paste
